Everybody
of course knows the flying saucer, the Frisbee.
But that - similar to a ball - different sport disciplines
with the Frisbee can be played in competition, is less known.
The most spectacular sport art is without any doubt the
Freestyle, where one or more people put
up a show with a flying Frisbee, executing different tricks
with the Frisbee. Although this is the most popular
frisbeesport worldwide, this sport is not being played in
Belgium.
In addition, there is discgolf, where players
cover a track similar to golf. In Walloon you can
find two 9-holes-courses in Jambes and Braine l’Alleud.
Also becoming popular in Belgium is Ultimate, a team sport
similar to rugby, where the players use a Frisbee instead
of a ball. In Belgium we even have an official
competition of Ultimate, with teams from all over the country.
As a matter of fact, it is the only team sport where the
official games are held without any referee. No surprise
that ultimate players feel very strongly about fair play.
Dogfrisbee
has different disciplines, although those are mainly combined
by most players.
Depending and the competition format, names and rules may
differ slightly, but there are always two Trends :
Distance
throws : In distance players use only one disc
that is thrown over a distance and caught by the dog.
There is always a difference between Long Distance, where
the dog only catches once as far as possible, and Mini Distance,
where the dog catches several times within a certain time.
This last branch can be combined with accuracy throws and
has different names, like Distance – Accuracy, or
Toss and Fetch. Also other Versions like Dogdartbee
or Quadruped may be catalogued as Mini Distance.
Freestyle : Just like in human Frisbee,
Freestyle is the cream of Dogfrisbee. Within a certain
time players show together with several discs and their
dog a sparkling show. The tricks and show elements
are judged by a jury, taking into account different
standards like athletic condition of the dog, release diversity
of the handler, safety, showmanship, etc.
