Obviously
while training Dogfrisbee, we only train in a positive way.
This implies that we avoid any kind of corrections at all
cost, and that we just train by rewarding the desired behaviour.
A dog with a bit of
“will to please” will soon realize what you
expect to get his reward. This reward might be treats, caring
words, touching, or … a frisbee !
Personally we only
train positively, but we rarely take out a clicker. Most
dogs are so fond of a Frisbee, that they barely have any
interest in treats at all. So it requires another approach
compared to obedience and alike, although the general principles
of operant conditioning remain the same.
We rather reward with
some kind of clicker word (eg “Good Boy”),
followed by a variable reinforcement.
But, once you have
the Frisbee in your hand, forget about rewarding with anything
else but the disc.
Still, take care that
your routine does not become Doggydance (heelwork to music)
with a Frisbee as reward. Make sure that the Frisbees are
an essential part of your routine, and not do a tric followed
by a Frisbee. This does not look good, and most jury are
quite allergic to this kind of routines.
Operante conditionering is a term that
comes from the psychology and represents the voluntary learning
motivation and reward.
It would lead us too far to see the full theory around here
to describe, but for those interested, we refer to the website
Geert De Bolster (www.debolster.be).
