Since
any Frisbee throw has a very unpredictable flight, and since
most dogs when just looking at a disc get very excited,
accidents in dogfrisbee are never far away.
The slightest breeze may cause a complete misjudging of
the dog’s jump, where bad landings may easily cause
injuries to your beloved dog.
Most dogs think flying saucers are absolutely swell and
have only eyes for the projectile, totally ignoring any
bumps, holes, fences or whatsoever …
To prevent or even better exclude any possible accident,
we should play only dogfrisbee in ideal circumstances.
- Throwing
technique:
A flawless technique of the handler is crucial.
As long as you cannot throw the Frisbee accurately within
one meter, Frisbee throws with dogs are absolutely out of
the question. You may of course start teaching the
dog tricks, let the dog catch the Frisbee out of your hand
(handtakes) or throw rolling Frisbees over the ground.
Frisbee consists of an immense number of throws, which you
should always practice without your dog first. Your
four-footed-friend only comes into play, when you have mastered
throwing. Of course, once you know a simple
backhand, you can use this throw with your dog, while practicing
other throws without.
- Field:
Prior to your practice, you should check ALWAYS the ground.
Do you see any sharp or dangerous objects on the ground
that may hurt your dog ? Is the surface entirely flat,
no holes or molehills ? Since your dog will mostly
look upwards while chasing the Frisbee, it is of the utmost
importance that there are no unexpected obstacles on or
in the ground. Even small pits may cause severe wrenching.
- Weather
conditions :
We advice you not to play Frisbee when the weather is too
hot. Dogfrisbee is very intensive for your beloved
quadruped, and with a high drift your dog may not throw
in the towel in time. Make sure, especially with warm
weather, that you have always drinking water near you.
Also watch out for wind, which can be your best friend or
your worst enemy while playing Frisbee.
- Discs :
It is also very important that you only use the right discs.
A good dogfrisbee disc is not more expensive as a normal
Frisbee, on the contrary. It is very important that
the disc is soft, so that the dog may not hurt his teeth,
but allowing a firm bite. The harder your dogs
bite, the softer the disc should be.
Price for a standard dogfrisbee-disc is barely € 4,
for a softer Jawz-disc you may pay until € 15.
Quite cheap, but take into account that some dogs view Frisbees
as candy. The more expensive Jawz and Super
Hero discs are better resistant against heavy biters.
You may teach your dog a softer (but firm) bite into the
disc.
