Although
it is easily said that all breeds are suitable for dogfrisbee,
we need to comment on this general saying. First
of all, your dog has to enjoy working with you. Second
of all you will have to convince your dog that it is fun
to run after flying objects.
For the heavier breeds it is surely not obvious to play
Frisbee with. Jumping with dogs that are heavier
than average, carries always a risk, and most of them are
not eager to jump at all. But of course you can also
do dogfrisbee without high jumps.
Especially dogs with a shorter snout do have problems catching
a Frisbee. For instance dogs like English bulldog
or Cavalier King Charles will have problems in this area.
Young dogs under 15 months of age, may not make any jumps
at all. Please make sure not to force jumping with
your puppy, this might ruin his dogfrisbee career before
it even started.
Dogfrisbee is a sport that requires an enormous amount of
effort from your dog. Strangely enough, most dogs
tire very quickly while playing dogfrisbee, so keep your
sessions short. Five minutes intense dogfrisbee playing,
equals 15 minutes retrieving tennis balls. This is
mainly due to the unpredictable trajectory of the disc,
which forces the dog to stay fully alert.
If you start training your dog, he should of course be healthy
and in good shape. Is your dog overweight, then first
start a diet and train the dog by walking and running.
Of course is it perfectly possible to play dogfrisbee without
dangerous jumping and vaults. Depending on the physiology
of your dog, you can probably create a complete freestyle
routine, but always keep the qualities and shortcomings
of your dog in mind and never forget that both of you should
have FUN while playing Frisbee !
